School Residencies

Book Wee Bop at your school

Wee Bop school residencies are a fun and engaging way to encourage the students to dance, sing, and/or play instruments. Wee Bop believes (and research confirms) that learning through music can be an exciting, interactive, and fun way to learn new topics. A Wee Bop residency can transport students' imaginations to a jazz concert in 1950, to explore the animals of the outback of Australia or help the students learn about new authors and books. All while incorporating instruments, singing and movement along with each topic.

Possible Topics

  • The Jazz Club (social studies, math and English)
  • Sing Me a Story (English and math)
  • Little World Travelers (social studies and math)

Jazz Residency - Marcy Open Elementary School

Marcy 1st and 2nd graders learn about African drums and their roots in jazz. Marcy 1st and 2nd graders learn about African drums and their roots in jazz.

First and second graders at Marcy Open Elementary School in Minneapolis learned about Jazz for Black History Month in January and February, 2010.  Chellie Brown, owner of Wee Bop, conducted the residency through a Marcy Arts Project (MAP) grant.  During the residency the children in each of the five classrooms had three sessions in which they learned jazz history, instruments and musicians.  An all school performance in the auditorium by the children and professional jazz musicians on February 22, 2010 culminated the residency.
